AE Racing 2011 - Report
Alternative Energy Racing returned to Santa Pod Raceway for the 4th annual event, and once again it was a brilliant day of fascinating future tech and shed-engineering. The forecast rain failed to show up, and the entrants all got a chance to hit the dragstrip and have a crack at the quarter-mile dragstrip.
There was a huge increase in the number of electric vehicles for this year’s event, and the quality of entrants is also getting better and better each year. Entrants included cutting-edge production tech Tesla Roadsters and Nissan Leafs, prototype motorcycles and outright electric dragsters. Even the retro-tech of the Sinclair C5’s put on a good show, with one highly-modified example hitting an astonishing 55mph!
Alternative Fuel entrants continued to push the biodiesel and bioethanol boundaries, and another great mix of vehicles competed for the alternative fuel trophy too. Entrants included turbo-charged motorcycles, biodiesel hot-hatches, kit cars, and circuit racing motorcycles.
But the top honours from the day went to the following vehicles:
Results
Zero Emissions Winner: Sam Young in Blackcurrent, a 1965 electric VW Beetle with a time of 10.15 seconds at 132.97mph.
Alternative Fuel Winner: Andy Gilbert on a 1987 Suzuki GSXR1100 Turbo running E85 Bioethanol with a time of 8.89 seconds at 156.84mph.
