Alternative Energy Racing 2014 Report

The Seventh Alternative Energy Racing event went ahead on the 29th March. With an earlier date and uncertain weather in the build-up, the weather on the day couldn’t have been better. With sunshine from start to finish and plenty of track time for everyone it really was a great day.

Alternative Energy Racing saw a revised class structure for 2014 with Zero Emission Bike, Zero Emission Car, Alternative Energy Bike and Alternative Energy Car. The revision in classes was a great leveller allowing production machines an equal chance of winning a trophy as home built machines.

This year also saw support from Vauxhall with the local dealership bringing up two Vauxhall Ampera’s. York Ward and Rowlett were very kindly offering 3 day test drives even dropping the cars off at you door, with a display car set up and another making passes up the strip throughout the day it was really great to see a manufacturer supporting the event.

This Year Alternative Energy Racing saw the return of the handling track, this was claimed by Roy Pallister in his very impressive electric kart, with great acceleration and superb handling it was very difficult to match, posting a best time of 18.43 seconds to take the Handling Track trophy.

The variety of vehicles on track and on display was as varied as ever with electric bikes, motorcycles carts, cars, sidecars and dragsters. Alongside Alternative Energy Cars and Bikes. The track action was impressive as always with Dave Smith and his bio- fuel Hyabusa Super Street Bike running 8.17ET at 179.94 mph taking the trophy for Alternative Fuel Bike.

The Zero Emission Bike class was a tight contest with just 0.5 of a second separating the top three entrants. This tightly fought battle was eventually won by Neil Baxter on his Gagiva Electric Motorcycle with an ET of 20.09 at 63.44mph.

The Zero Emission Car class was dominated by the battle of the Ampera’s, the two to beat were Phil Ayres from York Ward and Rowlett a local Vauxhall dealership and Robin Goldsmith. The difference between the pairs best ET was only 0.03. As close as it was the quickest time for the day went to Robin Goldsmith with a 16.92ET at 81.09mph.

Thanks once again to everyone who took part and continued to support the show. Especially John Cave from the Battery Vehicle Society in helping to run the handling track and his work in the build up to the event. Also many thanks to Phil Ayres from York Ward and Rowlett for taking the time and effort to support the event. We hope to see AE Racing back next year bigger and better than ever!
